The Mill House, Shoremill, Cromarty

About the House

Mill House, formerly known as Dunmillen is a former water mill, built in 1784 and extended to its present size in 1849. Originally it was a two storey sandstone building with an all iron wheel in the western gable-end and a kiln occupying the eastern half of the lower floor. The mill ceased working in the early 1900's and is thought to have been converted to this dwelling in the 1970's. The picture below was taken some time in the early seventies (perhaps about 1974) prior to its restoration.

The burn running along the western end of the mill is known as Davidston Burn. The house retains many features from its original working life, the internal workings of the wheel remain within the master bedroom, the grain shute within the entrance hall, the original cast iron grain store door closes off the kitchen from the dining area and throughout the house there are numerous original wall and ceiling beams intact with iron nails etc.

The beach is just 50 yards outside the front door and at low tide you can walk to the nature reserve in Jemimaville or to Cromarty to enjoy perhaps an afternoon tea or a spot of lunch at the pub!

We have some resident wildlife - 'Freddy' as we call him is the pheasant who resides in the garden. We can often see him sitting just outside the kitchen window in the neighbours' conifers around 4.00pm in the afternoon.

We also have pine martins and they can sometimes visit the house and currently we have a pair of swans which have taken up residence in the bay at the front of the house.

Red deer are always in the top field so keep a look out if you're out walking.

The sea is too shallow for dolphins here but there are plenty of seals and swans. For dolphins wander to South Sutar, along in Cromarty or visit the peninsular by the Rosemarkie golf club - a perfect and well known dolphin watch spot.

The climate here is one of the sunniest and driest in Scotland and the house is generally very warm.

We have approximately 1/4 acre of land mostly laid to lawns but we are currently in the process of building seating areas which will enable everyone to take advantage of the superb views whilst enjoying eating and drinking 'al-fresco'.
